Learning the history not only allows you to appreciate the evolution of the product but helps you better understand how your air conditioning unit works today.

Continue reading this article to learn more about the history of the air conditioner and the different mechanical aspects that took place in its creation as well.

The Man Behind the Product: The AC Inventor

ac inventorIt all started because of a foggy train platform in Pittsburgh in 1902. The AC inventor, Willis Carrier was an Engineer and Cornell graduate as he stared through the mist and had a realization. He discovered that he could dry the air by passing it through water to create fog.

By doing this, he realized he could manufacture air with specific amounts of moisture in it. He then invented a way to control humidity, which became the foundation on which the air conditioner was developed.

It was with this invention that Carrier made entire industries possible. Without the invention of the air conditioner, the world would not know a life of baked goods or wartime supplies. It even led to the boom in summer movie blockbusters because people would flee to the conditioned movie theater to escape the heat.

Things like shopping malls, international flights, and even computers were invented and created as an effect of his invention as well. The invention of the air conditioner was a game-changer for the human race and Willis Carrier quickly became known as the “Father of the Air Conditioner” soon after it came to market.

More About the Time Period

Since the beginning of time, man has been obsessed with the idea of controlling the weather. In 1902, however, with the invention of the air conditioner, Carrier gifted the world the power to control the weather -- indoors at least.

Originally, air conditioning was not invented for human comfort. It was invented because a printing company needed to control the humidity in their printers in order to print in color.

The world just experienced a great shift from The Industrial Revolution and the economy began to evolve tremendously. It wasn’t until the air conditioner, though, that the world began to see what the economy could turn into.

The air conditioner essentially became the vehicle that drove the American economy into a place the country had never seen. It is because of this invention that many other inventions became possible.

The Development of the Air Conditioner

The development of the air conditioner borrows from the mechanical concepts of refrigeration. Essentially, Carrier’s system controlled the humidity in the air by sending the water through coils that were cooled with cold water which removed moisture from the air as well.

ac developmentIn 1993, Carrier developed an air conditioner that became the most wanted model in the marketplace during that time. This unit was composed of the following parts:
  • Belt-Driven Condensing Unit
  • Associated Blower
  • Mechanical Controls
  • Evaporator Coil

If you look at air conditioners today, they haven’t changed much. The fundamentals of all air conditioners are still based on one of the very first models to ever reach the market.

Willis Carrier was ahead of his time. He thought he was solving a small problem for a printing company when he actually solved the world’s problem of suffering through the heat of summertime.
