Hands Holding Up the Word "Tips"

Breathe Easier with Cleaner Air

What does it mean to be a good neighbor? It means waving hello when driving past another car. It means offering to cut a neighbor’s grass when their lawnmower breaks down. It means trying to provide a safe and healthy community for everyone to live in and enjoy, and part of that healthy living means keeping the air cleaner for everyone. In times like these, people must care about their neighbors’ health and even the health of people they may not know.

More and more, people are trying to take small steps to improve the environment. They may be making the switch away from plastic products or starting to compost some of their waste rather than throwing it all in the trash. Many homeowners are trying to determine ways to bring more energy efficiency into their homes as well.

Fortunately, there are all kinds of government grants available to help finance energy-efficient initiatives. These incentives includes helping homeowners pay for renewable energy technologies like solar power or geothermal heat pumps or installing other energy-efficient home improvements like high-efficiency lighting retrofits or attic insulation.

Many homeowners don’t know these kinds of grants exist, but it’s worthwhile to research what options are out there! Local governments really encourage these “green” initiatives in the home because they improve overall air quality for the entire community.

Keeping Air Filters Clean

Changing out air filters should be a regular home maintenance task, but it’s easy to forget about it. Why do filters need to be changed? Over time, dust and dirt collect on the filter, which can decrease the efficiency of the HVAC system and increase energy bills. Keeping air filters clean helps everyone in the home breathe a little easier, but it especially benefits those prone to respiratory conditions like asthma or allergies.

The biggest question when it comes to air filters is: how often should they be changed? The lifespan of a filter depends on its thickness. A 1-inch or 2-inch filter needs to be switched out about every three months, a 4-inch filter should be replaced every six months, and a 5-inch filter should be changed at least once a year.

While furniture can’t be switched out as frequently as an air filter, there are other ways of getting rid of the dust, pollen, and other allergens that become trapped in the fibers of your furniture. Certain pieces of furniture can be washed, like removable couch and chair covers. So check the labels as this is a great way to freshen up the furniture in a home.

Otherwise, simply air out the furniture. Set it outside for a bit in the sunlight (on a non-humid day) to eliminate any lingering smells. Or simply open up the doors and windows to let the furniture get some sunlight and fresh air. It’s simple actions like these that can make a world of difference to the air quality in a home and, in turn, help improve the air quality of your entire community.
